Leonard Cheshire Disability

Case Study: increasing competitive advantage while freeing up resources to improve the care of people with disabilities
The client

Leonard Cheshire Disability is a voluntary sector organisation dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities throughout the UK and internationally. The charity runs care homes and care at home services generating annual revenues of £135 million. The organisation was embarking on an ambitious change programme aimed at reducing indirect expenditure by almost 10% of revenues, reinvesting it in areas that directly benefit disabled people.

What we did

Collinson Grant Healthcare was asked to support the programme in three ways:

Organisational development

After an intensive period of consultation with senior managers and trustees we arrived at an organisational design that reduced the indirect workforce by the equivalent of 150 full-time positions – almost a third of the total – with no negative impact on the quality of care provided.

Process improvement

How effectively was care provision managed day-to-day? How efficiently did the organisation deal with its suppliers? How well did it manage its Finance and Human Resources functions? Were all these activities properly supported by IT? Our team helped managers to identify fundamental weaknesses and in most cases to quantify their cost.

Competency framework

By clarifying the various key competences needed across the organisation, our team helped to define a new framework for managing recruitment and selection, performance at work and the development of personal skills.

The result

Collinson Grant Healthcare has improved efficiency within the organisation and helped managers to completely re-think their ways of working while successfully overcoming the barriers to change.

The programme had an immediate impact – the client is well positioned to achieve their overall 10% objective. Equally importantly, Leonard Cheshire Disability is now managing everything it does in a much more businesslike way, strengthening its position in a marketplace that is becoming increasingly competitive.
