A review of Human Resources

We start from the premise that, to succeed, a business needs a capable and high-performing staff. So first it needs to recruit the right people. Then it must manage and reward them effectively. And it has to train and develop them fully.

A big firm in private healthcare asked us to assess its efforts to manage, train and develop its staff. Now we all know lots of firms that claim to be ‘a people business’. But this is one. It stands or falls on how good its employees are.

We found a curate’s egg – it was good in parts. The personnel strategy at the centre was great. And the programmes for reward and competence were top notch. It was the sites that let things down. A bit of cash spent there on professional personnel management would be repaid in spades: performance up; absenteeism and labour turnover down.

The opportunities were clear. The outcome was a ‘new agenda’ for Human Resources and a programme to set up - and sustain - consistent practices at every site. In the long term, better service to customers will bring even greater benefits.
