The workforce in Pathology faces a number of problems: the current profile of the workforce is not optimised, and shortages of particular skills are predicted; people at different grades do the same work; there is no guidance on how to reconfigure the workforce in response to changes in volumes of tests; and inefficiencies and productivity are not always well understood or measured.
So we were asked by the Department of Health to develop a toolkit to support workforce planning in Pathology. It includes an analysis tool that will enable Pathology managers to model their service and simulate the effects of changes in productivity, volumes of tests and mix of skills. There are facilitation guidelines for managers and workforce planners, and guidance on how to assess workforce demand and supply (including pointers to useful tools and techniques from other sources).
